Build A Successful Law Practice With These 3 Time Management Strategies

3 Time Management Strategies To Build A Successful Law Practice

As a business coach for lawyers in solo and small law firms I get asked a lot of questions about time management. For example:

“I can’t get everything done.”

“I get to the end of the day and I feel like I haven’t accomplished much.”

“I’m not good at managing my time.”

“Time just gets away from me.”

We all have days like that, but the problem is when we consistently have days like that.

Time management is NOT about managing your time, it’s about failing to set your priorities and then failing to honor your boundaries to meet those priorities.

If you have issues with time management, you have to look at the priorities you’ve set, or if you’ve even set your priorities or goals.

Some of the priorities you want to set could be for the year, the quarter, the month, the week, and then day to day.

There are even tools out there you can use for setting your priorities.

For example, I use something called POWERSHEETS which gives you a step-by-step process to set up your goals and determine how you are going to meet them.

The important thing is when you find a process that works… stick with it!

So if you want to set a goal for making a specific amount of money, you will have to break it all down to figure out how you are going to get there.

You have to think at it from all angles, from how much business you will need to generate, what types of cases you will need, how long will they last, how much revenue will they generate… you get the picture.

Break it down into small tasks that become day-to-day activities.

Not everything will be in your control, but a lot of them will be. The important thing is to take the things you cannot control and put them in your schedule so you can prioritize around them.

To help yourself, here is what you can start doing now…

Set your priorities, block out time each day for the tasks that need to be done (daily & weekly), then adjust accordingly.

The next step, and probably the hardest part, is setting boundaries, especially from the distractions that keep you from managing your time and reaching your goals.

Are you constantly interrupted by … emails, texts, phone calls and/or social media?

These are the main ones keeping people from managing their time properly.

So how do you stop it?

HONOR YOUR OWN BOUNDARIES.

You already know how it’s done for clients, but you really need to honor your own boundaries when it comes to getting the business related tasks done.

Whether it’s Marketing, Finances, Team management how can you turn off the distractions?

Just remember this to get you started…

👍 Set your priorities

👍 Block out time

👍 Turn off and limit the distractions.
