Are You in the Right Niche for Your Law Practice

Do you ever wake up in the morning and say:

“I don’t want to go to my law practice today… ”
“I don’t want to do my work as a lawyer… ”

Do you find this happening more often than not?

When I talk to lawyers, solo lawyers in small firm practice and that’s exactly what they tell me.

One of the first things you have to look at right away is:
Are you in the right practice niche?

I like to ask this question, because if you’re waking up with feelings like those, it may exactly be where your problems stems from.

There is no doubt you know the importance of choosing a practice, specialty area, or niche to begin with, but let’s just review that for a moment.

I’ve heard of some lawyers practicing from 3 to 5 different areas of the law at the same time, and sometimes it really makes my head spin!

It makes me wonder a few things.

Firstly, how can you possibly keep up with all the changes in the law with that many areas and really be proficient?

When you are focussed on your particular practice area, then you develop your expertise in that area, and you have a higher level of confidence as the expert as well.

So what happens when you’re really NOT satisfied with the area of choice?

Where do most people find their practice area of law?
How did you end up in family, business, or personal injury law?

Was it where your first job was after law school?

The process is simple: You get out of law school; You get a job; You start to practice; You start to learn how to “Lawyer”

Then comes the but…

You may be the kind of lawyer who pushes through anything to get ahead, but after a while you may start to think, “Yeah, I’ve learned a lot, and it’s been great but it’s not really doing it for me.”
“I’m not happy” “What do I do next?” “Can I make a change?” “How do I make a change now?”

In a solo, or smaller practice, your options may not be as great as they may be if you are in a larger firm where you can change departments. But you can still make a change.

Through good planning, I was able to make the transition from one area of law to another.

So what do you need to do?

⭐ Accept your dissatisfaction
⭐ Find out why you are unhappy – make the pros and cons list
⭐ Make a list of other practice areas you may be interested in, but do the research! Know what it takes (get the full picture).
⭐ Talk to people you already know in the new area of interest.
⭐ Once you decide, then make a plan to transition yourself and implement it!

The bottomline is this is very doable, but you don’t know until you look into it.

You do have options. You are not as stuck as you might think.
