Building Relationships of Trust To Grow Your Law Practice

Great trial lawyers are great storytellers. But you also need to perfect the art of storytelling to market your law firm. Becky Schmooke will show us how to be a great storyteller.

As a lawyer are you good at storytelling?

How do you communicate and build relationships?

Your ability to tell a story can really make a difference whether you’re speaking to clients, potential clients, a judge or jury it’s all connected.

Most importantly, storytelling is the key to building trust.

There are two types of storytelling Becky Schmooke teaches.

Productive Storytelling are stories of vulnerability. They are stories you share to make you relatable to your audience so they connect to it and to you.

Destructive Storytelling are those stories which prevent us from sharing the vulnerable side of ourselves. Destructive storytelling can prevent you from being good at your job, or give you imposter syndrome, or enable you to feel afraid or weak.

Typically lawyers are terrified of “looking weak.” They are often taught to not look weak to anyone, especially the opposition, and there is very little room to show you are human with compassion and imperfections.

As a good storyteller, you have to be able to turn your destructive dialogue into something more productive.

“Stop reading between the lines. Read the words that are on the line and stop trying to read the ones that aren’t there!”

It’s so easy to misinterpret what’s going on around you and make up a story you believe in, when in fact what you are doing is creating your own destructive dialogue.

Catch yourself before you start on the destructive path and get clarification by asking questions. Get the facts. Instead of jumping to conclusions, be curious.

Listen to Becky describe the science of what happens within the body when you tell a great story (versus dry facts) and why it’s so good for you!
