What’s the first skill people should learn about networking?
When it comes to networking, your mindset is the first skill you have to develop. It has to be in it for the long game. You want to be in business for a long time, and therefore developing key contacts and relationships should last that long. One of the great things about building business relationships and referrals is as your relationships mature and grow, they become even more valuable. You get to pick who you want to have in your network, you get to pick who you want to build strategic referral relationships with. You have the ability to pick your team wisely, and pick who connects with you, who you have similar values, and similar beliefs.
The relationships you develop, start out professional. When you get that relationship that connects personally, as well as professionally, those are the best, most rewarding relationships. We all know we need to be professional, but what makes things so much stronger is that personal connection you make with people.
How do you start networking with people at events?
Maile has worked with a number of attorneys and says they naturally refer to each other because they usually pick a specialty. If someone approaches them about doing work in a specialty area, and it’s not their specialty, they frequently will refer them to colleagues who, in fact, do that kind of work. It makes attending networking events very important.
Besides other lawyers, where else can attorneys find clients?
Once you figure out who your ideal client you want to be working with is, you find other professionals who serve those exact clients. You’ll often find the conversations being held are similar, and yet those services cannot do everything for their clients. There will be a point where they will have to say: “I’m going to take care of this part of what you have going on. And then, I really recommend you talk to this person to help you with this piece.”
