Silence Your Inner Perfectionist To Become A Successful Lawyer

Lawyers do not need to be perfectionists.

If you feel as if you are not giving 100% in every aspect of your life, does that mean you are failing? Absolutely not!

My guest, Nicole Fredricks Jackson is a lawyer turned speaker and a perfectionist coach. Listen in and learn how to silence your inner critic (who thinks you need to be a perfectionist) and reclaim joy and success in your business life and personal life.

How does perfection stand in the way for lawyers?

Being a perfectionist can really get in the way of finding true happiness, but it can also derail your ability to advance. Getting out of your own way is half the battle. When you recognize the small things that hold you back and get the support you need to move your career forward, you will work through the idea you don’t have to be perfect.

How do you work through the fear of making a mistake?

Part of it is coming to terms with what really is something that has to be perfect vs what you can make a decision on with “imperfect” information. In a law practice it’s not a perfect science, but sometimes we have to make that second choice more often than not. Don’t overthink things too much by making it more difficult than it needs to be.

The nature of being a lawyer demands perfection, especially from judges. How do we deal with imperfections?

There is a lot of focus on mental wellness in our profession, but it is not helpful when judges push to point out our mistakes publicly. Although you cannot escape the initial impact of their words, how you decide to unpack it and rework the meaning of their words is entirely on you.

What choices can you make to avoid wanting to quit?

Instil small changes that have a big impact. Don’t compare yourselves to others. Understand what you do like and stop feeling guilty for wanting to work. Realize what you want to own and what habits can help you achieve it. Decide WHEN to be at home and when not to be, to set those boundaries. Create a travel schedule for your family. Schedule it in. What success means to you

“Success is making a lot of money” is a traditional model for most lawyers. You work like a crazy person and you make a lot of money.  We chat about why this is not working for you and why you don’t have to run your life with that definition of success. It’s okay if your definition of success changes.

You need to be a leader for your clients, and your team, but also for the profession and to design your career your own way. Help others coming up through the ranks, support other women – lift them up to propel their success.
