What Is A Legal Nurse Consultant and Why Do I Need Her?

30+ years of clinical and administrative nursing, with expertise in varied specialties gives Lisa Wade, a legal nurse consultant of Wade Nursing Consultants, a unique perspective into the day to day inner workings of the healthcare system as well as an understanding of the standards of patient care and nursing practice.

Lisa supports Attorneys by reviewing, translating and summarizing the medical records associated with medical malpractice and personal injury litigation, and organizing those records by creating chronological timelines.

All nurses are near and dear to my heart because I was a nurse before I became a lawyer. But I wanted Lisa to come on to talk to us today because a legal nurse consultant can add great value to your law business and can save you a lot of time and money. For example, getting  through medical records you may or may not understand. Her company can help you through it, and really give you a clearer picture of what you’re dealing with on the medical side.

We covered a lot of ground, so here are a few of the many questions I asked Lisa.

What do legal nurse consultants actually do? (listen for more details)

What type of field(s) would a legal nurse consultant cover?

“Any place any attorney has a say, ie, an injury case, or litigation, or a case where that is all going on, whether it is from personal injury from a car accident, or workers comp or workplace injury.

Or, I have worked with elder law attorneys, for people/clients who may have a change in their cognition. I have been of assistance to assess their cognitive status at the time of a particular interview. So anywhere there is an issue or a concern with medical, psychological,  or such problems within that field.

Legal nurse consultants can also help by assisting you on a home visit to see if there has been any cognitive changes in the client that you’ve been dealing with on a regular basis. A legal nurse consultant can also help find an expert that you need to be a part of that case and to support your case. So we are helpful like that. (Listen for more ways they can help).”

If I’m interested in using a legal nurse consultant, would I need to ask for a specific specialty area, or how would that work?

At what point should somebody contact you to get involved with their case?

“I always encourage you to contact me, even before you’ve taken it as a case, if you’re screening a case, just to make sure the records match exactly what that potential client is saying, because sometimes they don’t. And if you have a legal nurse consultant review and screen those records, before you commit, we could be helpful in knowing if you should take that case or not.”

We covered so much more, so you’ll just have to listen to get all the details!
